Everyone has broken dreams

Reading a post on Facebook (yea, I know, I’m old school), and I came across a post by Humans of New York about someone who wanted to be a model but she just couldn’t because she had not safety net that would allow her to focus on modelling without having to toil her days away.

It really hit me how often people dream and yearn for something but never really get to become whatever idea of themselves they formed in their heads.

The more people you meet, the more you see in the way of broken dreams. It seems like almost everyone is coming to terms with something they expected to happen, but didn’t. ~ Humans of New York post

I think this is a generally accepted truth. I mean, we all have our own broken dreams, and it’s not a bad thing. It’s just a part of being human.

I have been reflecting a lot about how we do not really live up to our dreams. Or, maybe there’s no point in dreaming at all. What really is the point of dreaming if we never get to live up to it?

Maybe it’s just a way of coping with the world around us. Or, maybe it’s just a way of feeling better about ourselves. Or, a way to feel better about ourselves. I don’t know. But I do know that I have a lot of broken dreams.

For example, I’ve always wanted to be a DJ, a journalist at some point, a pro cyclist at another, an academician and maybe, a music producer. I do not think I can live up to any of them in a single lifetime but I can experience them at least once if I tried.

Maybe, dreams are not meant to last a lifetime. Maybe, they are meant to be experienced and then let go.
